My name is Shelly Brown-Gunn and I serve as your Senior Transfer Services Counselor. I transferred to UCI in fall 1998 from Irvine Valley College and graduated in 2001 with a B.A, in Psychology & Social Behavior. In 2006 I completed a master's degree in Social Ecology, with an emphasis in Psychology & Social Behavior. Additionally, I put myself through college as a single mother of three children (Amanda-20, Brianna-15, and Matthew-13). I recently got married and currently live with my husband, Michael, and my children in Laguna Niguel.
My transition to UCI was far from flawless. Using my own experience, and those of other transfer students, I will help to facilitate your transition to UCI. You can think of me as your concierge or "cruise director" at UCI.
Through my job and on a volunteer basis, I am a passionate activist on behalf of UCI transfer students, trumpeting their unique needs across academic and student life disciplines. My most passionate goal is to let every transfer student know that they have a friend and mentor in me on this campus. I'm friendly, approachable and most of all, I've been there and done that!
I am happy to help you in any way I can. All questions and suggestions are welcome and encouraged by email, phone and in person. I look forward to meeting with you soon.

My journey in the United States began in 1997, when my family and I emigrated from Hong Kong to California. I attended Mt. San Antonio College for two years and transferred to UCLA, where I majored in Communication Studies and minored in Policy Studies with a concentration in Social Welfare. As an immigrant and a first generation college student, I was filled with pride and joy when I graduated from UCLA in 2001.
Upon graduation, I worked at a youth mentoring organization, which enabled me to discover my passion in making a positive difference in people’s lives and motivating others to achieve personal goals. In summer 2005, I returned to college to pursue a Master’s degree in Education Psychology and Counseling at California State University, Northridge. As a graduate student, I took advantage of opportunities to use my skills and experience in assisting students in transition. By serving as a graduate assistant of New Student Programs, a mentor of the Freshman Seminar, a group facilitator of a College Exploration Group, and a counseling intern at Los Angeles City College, I was able to interact with students from diverse backgrounds and empower them to reach their aspirations.
I joined the UCI family as a Transfer Services Counselor in June 2007. As a former transfer student who has overcome barriers, I am thrilled about the opportunity to assist you with your transition to UCI. Please stop by the Transfer Student Center and Lounge to say hello and explore our services and resources. I can also be reached by phone and email. I look forward to getting to know you!
